I was born in Long Beach, California about a 100 years ago. My dad was a
gambler so we moved around a lot when I was young. When I was 14 we moved to
Priest River, Idaho. I went to high school there, I was on the boxing team
and went out for football and track. I joined the Army on Sept 7, 1954, two
days after I turned 17. I spent 3 years in the Army, most of it in Germany.
I was on the Regimental boxing team and later on I was part of a 5 man
officiating team that traveled around Europe officiating fights. When it
wasn't boxing season, I was the Regimental Draftsman.
After I got out of the Army, there wasn't much work available so I just
bummed around, raised a lot of hell. I got married in 1958 and had two
daughters, Barb and Toni. I got divorced in about 1961. My ex-wife, Marilyn,
married a guy in the military and they moved to Germany. I didn't see
my daughters for over 30 years.
I attended Weber State (Weber Jr. College then) for two years. I drove bus
for the Ogden City Bus lines while I was going to Weber. I spent a year in
Denver and then came back to Salt Lake City to attend University of Utah. I
went to UofU for two years. I was on the UofU track team (shot put). While I
was going to school I had many jobs, I drove bus for Lewis Bros Stages, drove
ready mix truck, welder, hod carrier, etc. Later on I went to college in
Southern California and got my degree.
In 1962 I got married again to Evelyn Beldin, Evie was from Spokane,
Washington. We we're married for 22 years and had a son Mike. We are
divorced now but we are still good friends. We moved to Hollywood and lived
there for three years and then moved to Orange County. We lived in San
Clemente for many years. My son Mike attended 1st grade through high school
in San Clemente. Mike was on the high school golf team, played in the Junior
World championships and later on played college golf. Mike was a Northern
California collegiate all star. Later on he turned pro and played some mini
tour events. He tried to qualify for the US Open 3 or 4 times. Mike
currently works for Microsoft Support in Coos Bay, Oregon.
I took a job with Pacific Telephone in 1966, I hired on as a telephone
installer but had many other jobs, including, telephone repairman, line
assigner, pole climbing instructor, installation instructor, repair
instructor, and taught basic electricity. I was promoted in 1971 and was a
manager for over 20 years. I retired from Pacific Bell in 1991.
Right after I retired my mother (Vivian) got a call from my first wife's
brother, he was doing genealogy and wanted some information about our side of
the family. My mother said that she would really like to see my daughters,
Barb and Toni. One thing led to another and my daughters flew to San
Francisco, I met them for the first time in over 30 years. My son Mike met
his sisters for the first time. I found out that I had 5 grand children. I
have been really close to my daughters and their families ever since, I even
moved back to Utah for 4 years. I worked for Novell, Unisys and a company
called Ovid Technology.
My daughter Barb Sweeten, lives in Roy and works for the Government at Hill
Air Force Base. Barb has a son David and a daughter Alyssa. Alyssa
is currently working for the 2002 Olympics.
My other daughter, Toni had two sons, Matt and Travis, and a daughter
Michelle. Toni and her husband currently live in Southern California.
Golf has been my passion for the last 30 years. I recently went to Ireland
with some friends, we played some of the best courses in the world. When my
son was 17, we went to Europe, we played all of the British Open courses in
Scotland and courses in France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
I have been a computer professional for 19 years. I'm currently a
consultant for Bank of America and I am doing web development for several
other companies. I have my own company, OdieWare, I'm the president, janitor,
etc.
I was involved with arm wrestling most of my life and one time I was
introduced on the Steve Allen show as the "Arm Wrestling Champion of the
Western United States".
My wife Evie and I once won a pool table and a bunch of other stuff on
"Let's Make a Deal".
A little over a year ago I bought a new home on a beautiful golf course,
things are going better for me than any other time in my life. The problem is
that now I'm too old to enjoy it, actually, I should be in a rest home
someplace.
